The group formation in P. paniscus is flexible as in P. troglodytes. A group consisted of 17 chimps on the average, and large groups of more than 30 chimps were often observed. Of the observed cases, 80% are of the mixed group type [sex ratio]. The group size varies with seasonal change of the abundance and distribution of food resources, but in general it is larger than that of P. troglodytes. The socionomic sex ratio does not seem to be highly correlated with the group size, and was an average of 76. Neither the proportion of females with infants in a group nor that of estrous females seems to correlate with group size. The group composition seems rather uniform. This uniformity may be attributable to the concentrative nature and high male/female affinity of P. paniscus. In comparison with other African anthropoid apes [gorilla], P. paniscus shows less sexual differentiation in its social structure.
