Sphingolipids are known to be among the important components of membrane lipids in higher animals and plants. In contrast, they are extremely rare in prokaryotic cells and reported to occur in only limited genera of bacteria [1-6]. Previously, we have found that the cellular lipids of Flavobacterium devorans ATCC10829, which belongs to the Pseudomonas-like group IIK-type 1, contained a unique sphingoglycolipid, ceramide glucuronic acid [7]. Group IIK-type 2 strains, very much like group IIK-type 1, have also been characterized by the presence of sphingophospholipids [8]. On the basis of the presence of this unique compound and numerical taxonomical studies of 92 phenotypic characters, Yabuuchi et al.[9] placed the organisms, group IIK-type 2, in a new genus and proposed new names Sphingobacterium gen. nov. Since S. versatilis KM2138 was designated as the nomenclatural type for the species and three biovars are regarded as composing three separate species; biovar 1, S. versatilis (including KM2138); biovar 2, S. multivorum (including 926) and biovar 3, S. mizutae (including KM1203), we have started
