We describe a proposed 2 generation instrument (KMOS) for the ESO VLT which will deliver a unique multiple deployable integral field capability in the near-infrared (1P 7KH VFLHQFH GULYHUV IRU VXFK DQ LQVWUXPHQW DUH presented and linked to the functional specification. The overall instrument concept is discussed in the context of two proposed solutions for delivering a deployable integral field capability. Detailed discussions of these two approaches, and ongoing prototype studies, are described in separate papers.
