* Read before the regular meeting of the New York Surgical Society, February 1953. Submitted for publication April, 1953. of patients, all but 16 that lived more than five years after operation have been followed over five years. One hundred patients of the 898 total have dicd since they were operated on, 69 of causes that were apparently unrelated to their ulcer or their operation. Of the 31 deaths of early or late operative complications, all but one oc-curred prior to mid-1946. The frequency of follow-up visits is not shown in any table. The usual practice is to sec patients within a month after they have left the hospital and to have them return every few months until they appear to be getting along satis-factorily. The follow-up visits are then spaced about a year apart. About 85 per cent of the information that is collected for the follow-up record comes from personal interviews and examinations. The remain-der is obtained by letters. In addition to dividing the patients into two groups according to whether they were operated on before or after January 1, 1946, we have separated the 232 gastric ulcers from the 666 duodenal ulcers. Pa-tients who had both gastric and duodenal ulcers were classified with the latter. Those who had pyloric ulcers were called gastric.
