The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is an Internet standards-track protocol for establishing, modifying and terminating multimedia sessions, including IP telephony calls and multiparty conferences. SIP supports personal mobility, addressing users by identifiers that are independent of their current network address. SIP has been extended to notify users of events, such as the presence of people, changes in SIP-initiated sessions and emergency conditions. SIP is also used for instant messaging (IM), delivering text or multimedia messages to one or more destinations.
