Due to many recenl advances, allogeneic bone marrow transplantation now provides an effective means for curing patients with severe aplastic anemia and acute leukemia as well as correcting congenital immune and enzyme deficiencies [1-3). In spite of these advances, however, acute and chronic graftversus-host disease (GVHD) are still frequent complications and contribute significantly to the overall mortality. The intestinal manifes tations of GVHD. particularly acute GVHD, are the most life-threatening aspects of GVHD, leading to severe mucosal sloughing, watery diarrhea, hemorrhage, and coloniza tion with associated sepsis. Yet GVHD in this organ is still an enigma, with basic ques tions about the pathophysiology of mucosal injury unknown and under current debate.
