A ceramic material of translucent polycrystalline alumina to transmit light therethrough, said ceramic comprising crystal particles, characterized in that the mean facet length of the crystal particles is not greater than the maximum wavelength of light, ie , 780 nm, to be transmitted via said polycrystalline ceramic; the average length of the defined faces as a mean value of the lengths of sides forming polygons that appear in cross sections of the crystal particles constituting the ceramic material being, and wherein the average particle size of the particles crystal is not greater than 1 micron; and the average aspect ratio of the crystalline particles is 1 to 1.5, further comprising said translucent polycrystalline ceramic material a metal oxide in an amount of 0.02 to 2 mol%, the oxide binding the crystal particles inside the ceramic material, wherein it said metal oxide is an oxide of one or more metals selected from the metals belonging to groups IIIA and IVA of the Periodic Table, excluding Ti.
