Wild-birds were captured periodically from a south Alabama area between November, 1959, December, 1960 by means of Japanese mist nets. The birds were banded, bled from the jugular vein, and released. Many were subsequently recaptured one or more times." A total of 65 virus isolations was made from 3, 020 blood samples tested, 42 of Eastern encephalitis virus and 23 of Western encephalitis virus. All of the isolations were from birds sampled between the months of September and December." The results of serologic tests of 2, 176 birds con firmed that little or no virus activity occurred in the area from January through July, 1960. A high antibody rate for both viruses developed from September to December. The highest proportions positive occurred in the permanent resident species, followed by winter resident, summer resident, transient and unstable species. Possible involvement of the transient species in southward transport of these viruses is indicated.".
