The American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) submits this letter to express concern with a critical omission of the role of the dietitian in the recent publication in Critical Care Medicine by Kleinpell et al (1). The article outlines the importance of “interprofessional practice”; however, beyond a brief mention in the Overview section of the article, the article does not describe or acknowledge the critical role of the dietitian on a care team.Dietitians are specially trained to provide critical and patient-specific clinical assessments of nutrition including recognition of malnutrition, yet they are not profiled as part of the interprofessional practice team in the recent publication. Intensivists are charged with “prevention, recognition, and treatment of malnutrition” and pharmacists with “review, consult, and advise on nutrition therapy,” but neither can fulfill these responsibilities without the patient assessment, input, and expertise provided by the team’s dietitian.
