The occurrence in pig serum and milk of an immunoglobulin homologous to human IgA has been demonstrated by its cross-reaction with a rabbit antiserum specific for human IgA. A specific homo logous rabbit antiserum against pig IgA was prepared which was used to trace the behaviour of this protein during chromatography on DEAE-cellulose and Sephadex-G 200, as well as during density gradient ultracentrifugation and electrophoresis on Pevikon at pH 8.6. The physicochemical properties of pig serum IgA, including its relative solubility in the presence of zinc ions, emphasized its resemblance to human IgA. However, unlike human IgA, the major part of pig serum IgA seems to consist of dimer molecules.
