Explored the findings of FH Duffy et al (1979) that 9 of 9 elderly patients with melancholia exhibited abnormalities of their visual evoked response (VER). Data from the 9 65–85 yr olds were grouped and compared with an age-and sex-matched normative control using the t-SPM technique developed by Duffy and colleagues (1981). Analysis revealed repetitive epochs of VER abnormality restricted to, and symmetrically distributed within, the posterior visual regions. A hypothesis is proposed for future investigation (ie, that elderly melancholic patients exhibit augmented amplitude of the VER, most pronounced in biposterior occipital regions).(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)
