Rapid research progress during the past decade has led to the isolation and characterization of many apparently distinct forms of cytochrome P-450 and has shown that the inducers, substrates, and inhibitors of this versatile enzyme are almost unlimited in number. Only in the past 3 years, however, have complete primary structures become known through protein and DNA sequencing, thus providing firm evidence that these cytochromes are distinct gene products. This chapter is concerned with comparative structures of the P-450 cytochromes as revealed by general properties as well as by partial or complete sequence information on about 30 such proteins.
