This study investigates the workings of postposition-initiated utterances in the sequential/interactional junctures in which they occur, and explores a range of social actions that participants accomplish with this apparently ‘ungrammatical’practice of talking. Through this examination, I show how interactional needs motivate participants to exploit and stretch the usage of conventional grammar, while the grammatical property of postpositional items in Japanese, ie, attaching themselves to a proximate nominal, provides resources to meet those interactional needs. This study, thus, aims to contribute to an understanding of the relationship between the grammatical organization of utterances in situated language use and the organization of social action for which those utterances are deployed.
