In 1914 I affirmed 1 that constipation was a factor, and a very essential factor, in the causation of epilepsy. I have found that constipation, always present in the patients who came to me, was caused by mechanical disturbance or distortion of the intestines, and that when these conditions of the intestines were corrected by surgical means, the patients in a large number of instances were cured without other treatment, not only of their constipation, but very often of their epilepsy. My increasing experience has confirmed the correctness of these views with respect to both the causation and the treatment of the disease. I was aware from the start, however, that, while the connection between constipation as the cause and epilepsy as the effect was obvious from the history of the cases, there had been given no adequate explanation or actual demonstration of the connecting link between the two conditions.
