Pyrethroid resistance in Aedes albopictus was investigated for several colonies collected in Hyogo prefecture (Kobe city), Fukuoka Prefecture (Fukuoka and Kitakyushu city), Nagasaki Prefecture (Tsushima city), and Okinawa prefecture (Main island, Yonaguni island, and Ishigaki island with its vicinity solitary islands) by the simplified larval knockdown bioassay using d-allethrin. Reductions in the pyrethroid susceptibility were suggested at 4 collection sites in the area around Kobe port, Kobe city and 3 collection sites in the area around Izuhara port, southern part of Tsushima island. Although the susceptibility indice were not high, reduction in the pyrethroid susceptibility was also noted at 2 collection sites in Okinawa main island. No conspicuous reductions in the pyrethroid susceptibility was noticed in the mosquito colonies collected in Ishigaki island and Yonaguni island. Not a single kdr (knockdown resistance) mutation in the voltage-sensitive sodium channel (VSSC) was detected in the mosquito samples collected in the present study.
