Railway embankment construction in permafrost will substantially disturb the heat and the mass transfer balance between the ground surface and the atmosphere and cause redistribution of temperature field underneath. Some test sections in Qingshuihe have been monitored for three years and the deformation and temperature data are analyzed to study the difference of the temperature field between the southern and the northern slopes of the embankment in permafrost region on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its effect on the deformation and the stability of permafrost embankment.Research findings show that the temperature field of the southern and northern embankment slope is asymmetrical in space and asynchronous in time. The 0 ℃ line drops down more rapidly in southern slope than in northern slope of the embankment during August and September. And it is more rapid in the freezing course of both surface and deep layer in northern slope than in southern slope in October. It is also different in thaw settlement of the two opposite embankment shoulders. It brings more thaw settlement in the surface layer of the southern embankment shoulder. As time goes on,it also becomes asymmetry in thaw settlement in deep layer of the two opposite embankment shoulders and this trend is developed.Although it has passed three thawing and freezing cycle, the temperature and deformation fields are not stable yet and the asymmetry trend is developed.
