Equivalent derivations of the inbreeding coefficient for a single locus can be obtained by correlation and by probability methods. The relationship between the 2 derivations may be expressed in the form rA = fA, where rA is the correlation of uniting gametes at the A locus, and fA is the probability that the 2 genes at the locus are identical by descent. For a 2-locus diallel model, a superficially similar relationship has been derived by Sved [see ABA 40, 5383], who showed that rAB2 = QAB, where rAB is the correlation of frequencies at 2 linked loci, and QAB is the probability that, given that the 2 genes at 1 locus are identical by descent from some near or remote ancestor, the genes at the 2nd locus will be identical by descent through the same pathways. If QAB is expressed in the form fAB2, where fAB is the probability of a single gamete remaining intact on the pathway for a common ancestor, it can be seen that the 2-locus relationship is completely analogous to the single-locus relationship given above, hence many of the recurrence relationships derived for single-locus models will have an exact counterpart in 2-locus models.
