Presents 2 experiments with 60 undergraduates and university staff each. For luminous stimuli in dark surrounds, judged circle size depended upon the type of inducing figure and the temporal lag between inducing and test figures. Inducing-figure luminance was an ineffective variable. Assimilation (size overestimation of the inner of 2 concentric circles) with simultaneous presentation, and contrast (underestimation) with temporal delays, confirm previous concentric-Delboeuf studies. A circle flanked by 4 intact larger circles (nonconcentric Delboeuf) and a circle flanked by 4 quarter-circle arcs (arc Delboeuf) showed contrast under both simultaneous and delay conditions. When compared to fixation trials, eye-movement trials resulted in diminished contrast for the arc Delboeuf and the nonconcentric Delboeuf, but enhanced assimilation for the concentric Delbeouf.
