The resistance offered by planted willow poles to uprooting and the strength of individual roots in tension were determined. Pole stability strongly depends upon pole age and spacing, the grain size and/or layering of the surrounding material, and on the type and severity of erosion. A simple model based on observations of pole failure is developed to estimate the maximum resistance that can be offered by a pole and used to link field results and laboratory tests. Some suggestions are made for improvements in planting techniques
