Most people living in “Fortress Europe” (and I expect the United States, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and elsewhere) remain largely unaware of the experiences people have when seeking international protection in their country. People forced to leave their homes in the wake of civil wars or genocidal violence must not only survive an often deadly journey with what little they can carry, but when they arrive they confront what Osayimwese (2017) called a “humanitarian industrial complex.” According to Zoë O’Reilly, as part of a “global network of camps,” these holding “spaces located on, between and within borders [are] where people seeking protection, safety and better lives are forced to wait for varying amounts of time, their lives on hold while they wait for decisions from outside, above” (p. 3). For many families and individuals, this means living in unsuitable housing, geographically isolated and disconnected from mainstream society for unknown periods of time.
