Safety Goals, the spotlight on patient safety lends credence and justification for the use of constant observers, including, among other priorities, fall prevention. 6 The culmination of a national nursing shortage and an expectation of excellent care in hospitals (for example, American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet designation or the Baldrige Award) propels facilities on a course that includes searching for and utilizing the best practice models of patient care. While the term “sitter” is the most familiar and common term used, the authors believe that the person does far more than simply sit with a patient. We prefer the terms “constant observer” and “therapeutic companion” because they imply a more active role. We’ll use these terms interchangeably throughout this article to familiarize the reader with them.
