The roots of Black life in America began in Africa. The long saga of dehumanization and truncated individual liberties and freedom began with the commerce in Black bodies and continued through the middle passage to various points in the Americas. Racial oppression was sewn with intricate stitches into the fabric of American society and culture by the hands of political, economical, educational, judicial, and social institutions. Institutionalization of racial oppression is a cultural legacy as well as an enduring and pervasive element of our psychological consciousness. The ability of Africans in America to survive oppression in all its permutations and progress over four centuries raises a basic question: What psychological and cultural resources enabled African-descended people in America to survive? In this chapter, I propose a theory of TRIOS as one story of this resilience. TRIOS is an acronym for the psychological elements of a cultural system and consists of five dimensions: Time, Rhythm, Improvisation, Orality, and Spirituality. It is proposed that each TRIOS dimension represents an important element of collective African experiences. It is further proposed each element can be represented in the psychology of individuals. In addition to each element influencing behavior on its own, the theory suggests that the five elements combine to create an integrated collective and individual-level worldview. My colleagues and I will continue to explore the dynamics of TRIOS effects with the promise that it will not only illuminate the resilience of African Americans, the cultural foundations of Africans, but a positive spirit of humanity. Kenneth Clark believed strongly in the common humanity of all people, and the universal value of equality and social justice for all. The concept of TRIOS may advance us closer to that reality in the years ahead.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
