To investigate how breast cancer (BC) survivors with comorbid diabetes mellitus (DM) conceptualize their illnesses. A purposive sample of 19 community-dwelling, English- or Spanish-speaking women with DM in New York City who received chemotherapy or hormone therapy for stage I-IIIA BC in the past five years. Semi-structured interviews were administered by trained research staff, audio-recorded and transcribed. Three coders reviewed transcripts through an iterative coding process. An interpretative descriptive approach was used to identity themes. Major themes included (1) an inverse relationship between illness control and concern; (2) variation in perceived illness permanence; and (3) differences in illness consequences. Women with greater perceived control over BC viewed DM as a larger concern; others felt BC could not be controlled while DM could. Women who identified DM or BC as chronic perceived them as having more consequences. Understanding how BC survivors view DM and cancer may explain variation in survivors’ self-management behaviors, and can potentially inform oncology nursing practice by illuminating ways in which beliefs about comorbid illnesses may influence patient attitudes and behaviors in the context of cancer treatment.
