Feces containing the eggs of these parasites were placed (in Panama) on sand, loam, clay, and humus soils in both sun and shade and periodic isolations made to determine the rate of embryonic development. Practically all cultures thus made contained embryonated Ascaris eggs in 15 days. Some of the cultures contained embryonated Trichuris eggs in 21 days. Rate of development of eggs is controlled in part by the type of soil; all eggs (Ascaris and Trichuris) in sandy soil culture in the sun degenerated before attaining the infective stage; development of the eggs in humus soil was 3 weeks behind that of those in the other soil cultures. Temperature and soil data from the southern U. S. A. indicate that these findings may be applied to parts of this area. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: Author (courtesy Wistar Bibl. Serv.)
