In previous papers the author has attempted to formulate a mathematical model for simultaneous consideration of all processes that tend to change gene frequencies in a population and has drawn conclusions with respect to the type of population structure most favorable for evolution. The present paper is an attempt to clear up misapprehensions that have arisen, especially on the role of sampling in small, more or less isolated, populations. The theoretical distributions of gene frequencies resulting from fluctuations in the direction and severity of selection and in the amount and quality of immigration are presented for the first time. Comparison with the distributions resulting from sampling confirms the importance attributed to the latter where the population structure is favorable. It is shown, however, that one of these processes may be more important for certain genes, but another for other genes, even in the same population. These conclusions differ from those of Fisher and Ford (Heredity 1: 143-174) (all importance of selective differences) arrived at on the basis of a study of fluctuation in the frequency of a particular gene in a population of the moth Panaxia dominula. Analysis of their data from the point of view of this paper throws doubt on their interpretation even with respect to this gene.
