Data on the incidence of spontaneous tumors in animals are essential to the field of comparative oncology and to an understanding of the biology of cancer. In addition, the validity of experiments in carcinogenesis with any laboratory animal is, in part, dependent on knowledge concerning the types and numbers of spontaneous tumors.Reports in the literature on the incidence of spontaneous tumors in the hamster vary considerably. Factors which may affect these observations include age distribution of the population and the extent to which the animals are examined grossly and microscopically. A distinction between benign and malignant neoplasms is also useful, especially since the differentiation between hyperplasia and benign neoplasia may be difficult to assess on a histologic basis and can significantly influence the reported results. Similarly, the conflicting distinctions between adenoma and carcinoma may account for differing results among laboratories. These distinctions are especially noteworthy for endocrine organs in hamsters; for example, tumors of the adrenal gland represent a significant proportion of all tumors in some reports.
