This is one example showing how the Theory of Brittleness [Harder, N. A., Griffith's equation and theory of brittleness. Bygningstatiske Meddelelser, 1995, 66(2–3), 24–84 and Harder, N.A., Theory of brittleness in stresssoftening models of fracture mechanics, Engng Fracture Mech., 1996, 53(4), 527–534] can be useful in engineering practice. A size effect law for ultimate load is derived. The size effect is due to brittleness only, all other effects, e.g. stochastical variation of material parameters, are not considered. Therefore, some minor deviations between analytical results and results obtained from laboratory tests may be expected.
