FP mutants of nuclear polyhedrosis viruses (family Baculoviridae) frequently result from insertion of host cell sequences, some of which are transposons. Data that verify transposon-mediated mutagenesis in baculoviruses are discussed. The protocols used to identify and select these mutants provide an attractive experimental system for studying transposon-mediated mutagenesis in eucaryotes. Experimental evidence is discussed that suggests that these viruses could act as shuttles for transposons between species. The possible role of transposon in speciation of insects is discussed.
