It continues to be difficult to interpret observed relations between low or lowered blood total cholesterol (TC) and mortality from a variety of nonatherosclerotic conditions. Among the most perplexing is the increased suicide and traumatic death rate (nonillness mortality (NIM)) found to be associated with low cholesterol in cohort studies (1) and in randomized trials of cholesterol-lowering interventions (2). Several recent reviews on the topic of cholesterol and NIM are available, but the literature is still sparse, and the conclusions are tentative (3, 4). This issue of the Journal contains results from a cross-sectional study examining associations between serum lipids and psychopathology that are potentially relevant to the association between low cholesterol and NIM.
