This chapter presents a comprehensive perspective on the role of diversity in work group creativity. The authors discuss different forms of diversity relevant to creativity and develop a conceptual model of how diversity might affect a work group's early functioning, focusing on how diversity may influence members' affective reactions to one another as well as the cognitive processes they use. The chapter notes that diversity can have negative effects on both emotional reactions and cognitive processes, and that differences among group members can be sources of conflict and frustration in the early formative phases of group interaction, and this can carry over to subsequent operational and performance phases. The authors attempt to show how these early interactions combine with variables such as performance feedback and a group's self-monitoring activities, to affect a work group's subsequent interactions and its creative performance, and they discuss implications of their dynamic process model for future research on work group creativity.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
