Because of thermoelectric effects, a local current density appears in the dendritic network during the solidification of a metallic alloy. Thus, when a magnetic field is applied, a Lorentz force is created. Two alloys are solidified directionally in the horizontal configuration under a transverse magnetic field with the result that this force opposes the natural solutal buoyancy force. The experimental results show that an equilibrium can be reached for a critical value of the field. This value agrees with the predicted intensity of the currents. Finally, a simple model for the flow in the mushy zone is proposed. (C) 1998 Acta Metallurgica Inc.
