On 5 with the natural relative topology, we identify xeIί with f(x) -f ΐ e Z2 and get the space Q? with the factor topology, which is a surface homeomorphic with a doubly-connected plane domain. Its boundary components will be denoted by B and B', where the former corresponds to z = °o in S. The identified Zi = Z2 is a simple open curve A in § whose both ends tend to B and B respectively. We shall denote by % the projection of 5 onto the factor space §.
