Contrasuppression was first described as a regulatory activity which counteracted suppressive influences on helper T cells and so promoted antibody responses [I-4]. A similar activity was seen which affected cellmediated immune responsiveness [5, 6]. Subsequently, Braley-Mullen [7-9] showed that such antisuppressive activity could be directly focused on B lymphocytes. In all of these situations, the effector cells of contrasuppression shared certain surface phenotypic markers. They all were IJ*, Vicia villosa lectin-adherent, Lyt 1", 2-T cells. Some investigators, including ourselves, have found that not all of these markers are found on all T cells which express this regulatory activity [10-12]. Indeed, the only constant marker of all contrasuppressor T cells so far described has been their adherence to F. villosa lectin-coated Petri plates.
