Rabbit bone explants produced a collagenase inhibitor during the 1st few days in culture and later produced neutral metalloproteinases, one of which is collagenase. The collagenase inhibitor possibly blocked the activity of the other neutral metalloproteinases (after activation by 4-amino-phenylmercuric acetate), indicating that 1 inhibitor functions as a single regulator for all the metalloproteinases involved in connective tissue catabolism.
