Abstract A method for determining the Smith-McMillan form at infinity of a rational matrix is derived by considering the Laurent expansion at infinity of the matrix. This method is used to provide a new test for the absence of infinite zeros in a rational matrix and a new formula for calculating the highest degree among the largest minors of a polynomial matrix.
