The swelling by water of V2O5lamellar hydrogels in the highly concentrated range, i.e., from nearly zero to about 20 H2O per V2O5has been investigated by means of X-ray diffraction and wide angle neutron scattering (WANS). The study of the basald-spacing variation with water content clearly asserts an almost one-dimensional swelling behavior, stepwise in first stages of hydration up to 3 interlamellar water layers at least, and probably more continuous beyond. Slight deviations from the ideal model are discussed both in terms of experimental uncertainties and intrinsic gel properties.
