Data on the prevalence of cigarette smoking in the U.S. has been collected since 1965 by the National Center for Health Statistics in its household Health Interview Survey. The smoking data for the July 1978 - January 1979 period is tabulated by sex race and age. This questionnaire also elicited information on previous smoking attempts to stop and tar and nicotine levels of the cigarettes smoked. All this data is also tabulated. The tables show a decrease in smoking among adult males since the 1950s and increase among females since the middle-1950s and a narrowing of the gap in the proportion of males and females who smoke.
