The latency of the first major positive component (P1) of the transient visually evoked potential (VEP) was measured using a checkerboard pattern stimulus under varying conditions of retinal blur. One emmetropic and four ametropic subjects were tested with spherical lenses of varying dioptric power. The results showed that P1latency was shortest when visual acuity was optimal (i.e. when the pattern was least blurred) and that defocusing the retinal image had a greater effect on VEP latency for small checks (intermediate spatial frequencies) than for large checks (low spatial frequencies). When emmetropic subjects were tested with cylindrical lenses of varying dioptric power placed at each of four orientations (180°, 45°, 90° and 135°), P1latency was delayed when the lenses were oriented such that both fundamental Fourier components of the checkerboard were blurred but was unaffected as long as at least one of the two oblique fundamentals remained in focus.
