Cwik (2020) presents an ethical framework for distinguishing germline interventions by referring to existing translational projects of germline interventions such as germline genome editing and mitochondrial replacement therapies (MRT) along four dimensions (target, goal, outcome, and mechanics) using three categories (transferring, revising, and correcting). Cwik does not attempt to examine the ethical permissibility of different germline interventions but presents a framework for identifying common and unique technical and ethical issues raised by each of the interventions. Disaggregation of germline interventions in terms of the dimensions, according to Cwik, enables one to “draw finer-grained lines of permissibility.” We concur with his attempts to distinguish germline interventions along dimensions for evaluating ethical, legal, and social issues associated with each type of intervention.
