The origins and organization of the International Meloidogyne Project are described and the lines of investigation being undertaken are outlined. The world-wide distribution of root-knot nematodes and their economic importance are stressed and the basic knowledge necessary for their control is reviewed. A summary of some of the useful information gained by research workers co-operating in the scheme includes the fact that of the approximately 40 species described, only 6 are responsible for about 95% of the damage to crops and only M. incognita, M. javanica, M. hapla and M. arenaria are widely distributed: identification of species has been helped by additional information on morphology, host response, cytogenetics and biochemistry: distinct host races occur at least in M. incognita and M. arenaria and must be taken into account in any control programme using crop rotation and resistant crop cultivars: host races are consistent in their reaction on standard differential hosts.
