The banding patterns of the inbreeders L. temulentum and L. remotum were very similar (they differed in only one chromosome), indicating that they are very closely related. However, the banding pattern of the inbreeder L. loliaceum bore little resemblance to the other two inbreeders, having more in common with the outbreeders. The total chromosome length was about 40% greater in the inbreeding than in the outbreeding species and the total length of C-bands was more than twice as great in L. temulentum and L. remotum as in L. perenne (outbreeder). C-band heterochromatin in Lolium had 7.2 times as much DNA per unit length as euchromatin. While the proportion of heterochromatin was greater in those species with most DNA, the actual changes in total DNA amount throughout the genus were due equally to changes in euchromatic and heterochromatic DNA. It is concluded that species differentiation has been accompanied by changes in gross chromosome morphology and banding patterns.
