A feedforward network with homogeneous connectivity cannot transmit quantitative information by one spike volley. In this paper, quantitative information transmission through neural layers connected by Mexican-Hat-type connectivity is examined. It is shown that the intensity of an input signal can be encoded as a size of an active region in a neural layer.
