Ronald J. Clarke opened a general discussion of the paper by Mibel Aguilar: Is there anything known about the distribution of lipids across the bacterial membrane, ie is it asymmetric? When the phosphatidylglycerol content goes up in the stationary phase, is it in both lea ets or only on one side of the membrane?Mibel Aguilar responded: There is less known about the asymmetry of bacterial membranes than mammalian membranes but evidence is emerging of a dynamic system of lipid curation. A recent study by Bogdanov et al. 1 showed that PE levels are different in the cytoplasmic and periplasmic layers, and that the PE levels are modulated in response to different environmental factors.
