1. Introduction. The harmonic analysis on a connected semisimple Lie group G has as one of its aims the description, as explicit as possible, of the set GA of equivalence classes of unitary, irreducible representations of G. If G is compact, GA has been very explicitly described. If G is noncompact, one has only described all of GA in certain cases. In general one knows" almost all"(with respect to the Plancherel measure) of GA. The Plancherel measure is the measure on GA, equipped with the usual topology, given by the following theorem.
