Qualitative descriptions of the general circulation point out that there are three meridional circulation cells in each hemisphere. According to these descriptions, the boundary between the trades and middle-latitude westerlies lies roughly near 30" where surface pressure is high. Frictional outflow northward and southward is said to take place from the subtropical ridge, coupled with descent. Farther poleward, the average latitude of the polar front serves as the dividing mark between polar and middle-latitude cells. Here, air currents converge from both north and south and ascend. It is the object of this paper to determine the intensity of circulation of these meridional cells and to estimate how effective they are in maintaining the heat and angular momentum balance of the atmosphere. This cannot be done with computations based on the pressure distribution (geostrophic wind) but only with use of resultant wind vectors. Riehl (1950) previously calculated the net meridional flow component at the surface between latitudes 25" N. and S. This note covzrs the area from 45" N. to 45" S.
