In their 1918 publication of the first account of detailed investigations ofDientamoeba fragilis, Margaret W. Jepps and Clifford Dobell1expressed the opinion that there was no reason to believe that this parasite was potentially pathogenic. Yet in three of the seven cases they investigated, there were certain clinical histories long before the demonstration of the protozoon that could not be explained on other grounds. Later, several authors2–6described various symptoms in the carriers ofDientamoebaand pointed out the pathogenic effects of this species. They also described examples in which, after the introduction of specific antiparasitic therapy, the clinical manifestations disappeared together with the infection.
