Professor Peter Payne's listing of the largest 52 British industrial companies of 1905, published in 1967,'has been widely quoted. An alternative listing is presented here, based on enterprise employment rather than size of capital, confined to manufacturing industry strictly defined, and referring to the nearest possible year to 1907 for which data was available. Appendix 1 presents the new listing of more than 100 large employers; Professor Payne's original listing is reproduced in Appendix 2 to facilitate comparison. It soon became clear that it would not be possible to compile a definitive list of the 100 largest manufacturing employer^.^ The only systematic attempt to compile statistical information about the workforce (but primarily the output) of all British manufacturingenterprises was the 1907 Census of Production, and the returns for that census are not available for consultation. 3 Great care was taken in publishing the statistics of the Census not to reveal any information which would give a clear indication of the contribution of any individual firm to the output or total employment of a particular industry. No informationabout the number of individual establishments within each firm, or even industry, were published either. 4
