The plant concentration of various radioactive elements, after they have been added to soils in water-soluble forms, may be several orders of magnitude higher or lower than the concentration in the soil. Those that are most readily absorbed are soluble in the soil or are isotopic with elements that have metabolic functions in the plant. Those that are least absorbed are quite insoluble in the soil. The gamma radiation doses to plants would come predominantly from the soil, as would the beta radiation doses except for the beta radiation from those few elements which may be highly concentrated in certain plant tissues. The role of plants in movement of radionuclides in soil is minor except over very long periods of time.
