In this paper we investigate maximal von Neumann subalgebras and obtain complete description results of such subalgebras in all type I von Neumann algebras M with separable predual. This is done by first studying the cases M being L (Z) and B (H), and then lifting to the direct sums and tensor products of such algebras.
