Repetition is endemic in everyday conversation. Speakers not only repeat their own words and phrases at the level of the turn, and their own turns at the discourse level, but they also echo the wording, rhythms, and turns of their interlocutors. Recent work on conversation has begun to suggest cognitive and interactional explanations for both the same-speaker and secondspeaker cases. We employ repetition to simplify the task of production, and to r ender discourse more coherent, äs well äs to realize particular conversational strategies. This article systematizes the types of repetition recognized in past research along these and related Parameters. Additional cases ofboth same-speaker and second-speaker repetition are cited from recorded conversations in order to fill out the taxonomies. The search for overarching functional explanations of repetition leads to the hypothesis that many samespeaker repeats are modeled on adjacency pairs from dyadic exchange. The paper ends with a discussion ofsome consequences ofthis hypothesis.
